Trend #4 - ANIMAL PRINT - YAY!!!! I'm so excited! Let's take a walk on the wild side! If you know me - you know I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE me some animal print!
So here's the facts: Animal prints make you more attractive. Now the actual science of fashion is a curious thing and I don't want to bore you with the details so let's just look at the main idea. Ferocious animals have sharp teeth and want to eat you. Therefore, when you wear animal print is causes one to think of sharp teeth and being devoured. Somehow that also increases the feelings of attraction. People are attracted to what they fear, in this case ... YOU! Crazy don't ya think?
The obsession with animal prints has stood the test of time. So how did animal print become a fashion statement to begin with? Let's look back to the early 1900's. Sadly, it all started when travelers would return from African safaris with exotic furs and everyone who was anyone was wearing the hottest trend of the times. (Thankfully, now we can show a little of our rebellious side without harming any animals!)
The love for animal print remained strong thru the 20's, 30's and 40's. In his 1954 manual, The Little Dictionary of Fashion, Christian Dior famously wrote that “to wear leopard you must have a kind of femininity which is a little bit sophisticated. If you are fair and sweet, don't wear it.” As you can imagine, that didn't go over so well! The response of women everywhere - "Ummm, Hey Dior - don't tell us what to do!" I suppose his warning was more of a joke than anything, but nonetheless, animal prints became (and remain) the fashion anthem for powerful women all over the world!
It is at once trashy and expensive, loud and neutral, fierce and feminine. Yet in all its contradictions, one fact remains constant: a leopard never changes its spots – and our love for them will be eternal.
So, maybe you've never worn animal print before. I dare you to try! There should never be a question of should you or shouldn't you - umm, the answer is always YES you SHOULD!
